Still Alive….Barely August 31, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — frombeantosprout @ 12:58 pm

Since we’re on holidays, Henry has decided to take a vacation from sleep.  He fights it like it’s trying to kill him or something. Last night he screamed silly for 2 hours with us periodically checking on him and finally fell asleep at 10pm then woke up at 2am and then again at 5:30. The two previous nights he decided he’d had enough sleep at 4am which almost killed Chris who would take him out of the room and stay up with him. I’ve driven myself crazy trying to figure out what exactly the problem is. Is it teeth? Stomach pains? The play pen? The fact that we’re off his routine? All of the above? None of the above? ARGH!!

Between bouts of insomnia, we are having a pretty nice time. We spent two days shopping in Waterloo and arrived at the cottage on Saturday. It’s pretty nice here. The cottage reminds me a lot of my grandparents old cottage. All the furniture is ecclectic and antique-ish but well used. The lake is huge and you hear the waves coming up to shore constantly. It would be nice to fall asleep to that sound rather than listening to Henry freak out.

We’ve spent a day at the Corning glass museum (a lot more interesting than a glass museum sounds). They had this great contemporary art section that I think my mom would have really enjoying.

Monday we spent most of the day at the Sonnenberg Mansion and Gardens which is kind of like an American Sansouci park. They were beautiful gardens and my dad will be happy to hear that I don’t have a violent aversion to visiting gardens anymore like I did when we were kids and were forced to visit Butchard gardens in Victoria BC.

Yesterday we spent the day in Ithaca, NY. We ate at the Moosewood cafe which is apparently famous for being pioneers in vegetarian cooking (they make cookbooks or something like that). I didn’t think I’d like it but I had a really delicious mushroom and leak quiche type thing. We visited a farmer’s market and then Chris and I made our way up to Cornell University to visit the campus and get a Cornell Hoody and t-shirt. It’s a gorgeous campus. Just kind of built into the hills of Ithaca.

Today is Pat and Marty’s 43rd anniversary but we’re not quite sure what we’re doing just yet. So far we’ve hung out most of the day trying to get Henry to nap and watching Chris and George throwing rocks into the lake trying to hit a floating buoys. We’ve also been visited daily by a family of ducks, all female.

I’ll have to skip uploading pics in this post since it takes forever to upload them here. Once we get back home, I’ll upload some of my favourite pics.

Wish us luck for the next 3 nights of sleep!

And We’re Off August 26, 2011

I might be a little lax on the whole blog thing for the next week since we’re on holidays in the Finger Lakes. Yesterday, Chris and I ran around the house making everything clean for our pet sitter Jenny who will be house and cat sitting while we’re gone. I dropped Ginger off at my mom’s (she was not happy with me) and we left around 2:30. We had hoped that by leaving at that time, Henry would nap most of the way. No Dice! He cried pretty much half the entire trip to Waterloo and slept for about 45 minutes in total. We got to Waterloo around 6:30 (it took forever to get through customs) and I fed Henry then we went to eat at the hotel restaurant since it was way to close to Henry’s bedtime for us to go look for a reastaurant. I managed to finally get him to sleep around 8:30 and he woke up at 11:30 leading me to think “so long sleeping through the night, it was nice while it lasted” but then miraculously, he went right back to sleep and then woke up around 6:15 this morning. We went for breakfast in the hotel and they have one of those neat waffle machines so I just had to have one and since we’re on holidays, I had a diet pepsi for breakfast as well 🙂  Henry’s now napping, thankfully and when he wakes up, we’ll head out to the outlet malls and shop our little hearts out!

At a pit stop where I thought Henry was crying because he was hungry, turns out he just wanted to hang out with us and drive the car a little...

At breakfast this morning. I love this onesie, I feel it's his "morning after prom" outfit.

a closer look at the outfit

In both pics, Henry’s eyes look weird due to the flash picking up on one side of his face only and I don’t have the software on my netbook to fix it.

I started reading Simon Pegg’s book “Nerd do Well” yesterday. Man that guy is funny. I recommend it to all my movie buff friends (Aline and Derek I’m looking at you).

A few firsts August 24, 2011

Henry’s been jumping leaps and bounds developmentally.  It’s like overnight he decided to tackle a bunch of stuff at the same time. He can sit on his own for quite a while before either folding in half or toppling over either sideways or backwards. He’s also in a huge rush to move around.  He’s been good lately about doing tummy time but now he’ll whip one leg out to the side and do this twisty thing with his body (it kind of reminds me of those scary girls in the movies the Grudge and The Ring). If we put an object just a little out of his reach in front of him, he’ll lift his entire body up (almost like the starting position of a push up) but then unfortunately pushes himself backwards, away from the toy. I watched him for a while the other day make his way halfway across our living room backwards. There’s no purpose to the backwards crawling just yet, I don’t think he’s figured out that he’s moving around so much, once he does I think we’re in for quite a wild ride. The little guy will be walking before we now it.

Speaking of walking, I’ve mentioned before that Chris has been training for the army run half marathon which is to take place on September 18th. Well yesterday he decided he’d be willing to take pledges which would go toward the families of soldiers who are injured, killed, etc.. If you’re interested in donating, feel free to click here. He hasn’t set a plegde goal as he’s willing to accept anything people are willing to donate (accepted until midnight September 18th).

Now back to Henry and pics of his recent accomplishments:

Starting to interact with Ginger a bit more

Push ups aren't that hard mom...

Sitting up trying to unlock the mystery of this baby einstein booklet

Doing his backwards crawl right into our dresser

Showing off his mad ukulele skills

So long Jack, Rest In Peace August 22, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — frombeantosprout @ 12:32 pm

I was saddened this morning from the news that Jack Layton passed away.  I thought I would share his final letter to Canadians that was just released, the last line is beautiful.

Dear Friends,

Tens of thousands of Canadians have written to me in recent weeks to wish me well. I want to thank each and every one of you for your thoughtful, inspiring and often beautiful notes, cards and gifts. Your spirit and love have lit up my home, my spirit, and my determination.

Unfortunately my treatment has not worked out as I hoped. So I am giving this letter to my partner Olivia to share with you in the circumstance in which I cannot continue.

I recommend that Hull-Aylmer MP Nycole Turmel continue her work as our interim leader until a permanent successor is elected.

I recommend the party hold a leadership vote as early as possible in the New Year, on approximately the same timelines as in 2003, so that our new leader has ample time to reconsolidate our team, renew our party and our program, and move forward towards the next election.

A few additional thoughts:

To other Canadians who are on journeys to defeat cancer and to live their lives, I say this: please don’t be discouraged that my own journey hasn’t gone as well as I had hoped. You must not lose your own hope. Treatments and therapies have never been better in the face of this disease. You have every reason to be optimistic, determined, and focused on the future. My only other advice is to cherish every moment with those you love at every stage of your journey, as I have done this summer.

To the members of my party: we’ve done remarkable things together in the past eight years. It has been a privilege to lead the New Democratic Party and I am most grateful for your confidence, your support, and the endless hours of volunteer commitment you have devoted to our cause. There will be those who will try to persuade you to give up our cause. But that cause is much bigger than any one leader. Answer them by recommitting with energy and determination to our work. Remember our proud history of social justice, universal health care, public pensions and making sure no one is left behind. Let’s continue to move forward. Let’s demonstrate in everything we do in the four years before us that we are ready to serve our beloved Canada as its next government.

To the members of our parliamentary caucus: I have been privileged to work with each and every one of you. Our caucus meetings were always the highlight of my week. It has been my role to ask a great deal from you. And now I am going to do so again. Canadians will be closely watching you in the months to come. Colleagues, I know you will make the tens of thousands of members of our party proud of you by demonstrating the same seamless teamwork and solidarity that has earned us the confidence of millions of Canadians in the recent election. 2
To my fellow Quebecers: On May 2nd, you made an historic decision. You decided that the way to replace Canada’s Conservative federal government with something better was by working together in partnership with progressive-minded Canadians across the country. You made the right decision then; it is still the right decision today; and it will be the right decision right through to the next election, when we will succeed, together. You have elected a superb team of New Democrats to Parliament. They are going to be doing remarkable things in the years to come to make this country better for us all.

To young Canadians: All my life I have worked to make things better. Hope and optimism have defined my political career, and I continue to be hopeful and optimistic about Canada. Young people have been a great source of inspiration for me. I have met and talked with so many of you about your dreams, your frustrations, and your ideas for change. More and more, you are engaging in politics because you want to change things for the better. Many of you have placed your trust in our party. As my time in political life draws to a close I want to share with you my belief in your power to change this country and this world. There are great challenges before you, from the overwhelming nature of climate change to the unfairness of an economy that excludes so many from our collective wealth, and the changes necessary to build a more inclusive and generous Canada. I believe in you. Your energy, your vision, your passion for justice are exactly what this country needs today. You need to be at the heart of our economy, our political life, and our plans for the present and the future.

And finally, to all Canadians: Canada is a great country, one of the hopes of the world. We can be a better one – a country of greater equality, justice, and opportunity. We can build a prosperous economy and a society that shares its benefits more fairly. We can look after our seniors. We can offer better futures for our children. We can do our part to save the world’s environment. We can restore our good name in the world. We can do all of these things because we finally have a party system at the national level where there are real choices; where your vote matters; where working for change can actually bring about change. In the months and years to come, New Democrats will put a compelling new alternative to you. My colleagues in our party are an impressive, committed team. Give them a careful hearing; consider the alternatives; and consider that we can be a better, fairer, more equal country by working together. Don’t let them tell you it can’t be done.
My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.

All my very best,
Jack Layton

Math Whiz

Filed under: Uncategorized — frombeantosprout @ 9:18 am

I find I’ve lately become obsessed with math. Well more like obsessed with a combination of math, physics and chemistry. All of course in relation to Henry. He slept for 8 1/2 hours straight last night, from 8pm to 4:30am and then from 4:40 to 6:30. This is a great night for us. Every time something like this happens, I find myself making these massive mental calculations trying to figure out what was the magic formula that got us over 8 hours of sleep. Was it yesterday’s staggered naps? Was it the heated sweet potatoes that made him eat more than his usual portion? The play time we had leading up to bed? The sound machine set on “waterfalls” at a certain decibel?  A combination of some or all of these factors? I drive myself insane trying to figure it out. After putting him back down to sleep at 4:40 I started doing the math in my head, thus keeping myself awake for an extra 20 minutes. Chris keeps telling me “there is no formula Melina, it’s all random, you can’t predict a baby!” but I feel like if I just put a bit more effort into it, I can break the code (and of course, then make millions!).

Stop trying to figure me out. I'm unpredictable like the weather baby!

I don’t need to be a math whiz to figure out how lucky I am to have a guy like Chris. On Saturday he threw me a surprise birthday picnic at Pinhey’s Point with friends and family. I was so happy to see everyone (well what I could see after having been blindfolded for the whole car ride there, I had a bit of light blindness when the scarf came off).  We had great food, great company and of course more present!! 🙂  The best part was that with so many people there, I was able to mingle and not worry about Henry knowing someone always had him. He’s a quick little bugger though. He shoved wrapping paper in his mouth so quickly, you really have to keep an eye out for him now. I was so wrapped up in the moment, I forgot to take pictures. Oh well, I have all the images in my mind and they’ll stay there forever.

Finally, my friend Gary has returned after a long stay away much to the chagrin of Purrl:

Gary the chipmunk

This guy will hang out on our back deck forever and just wait until Purrl sees him, then he’ll come up to the window acting all tough like “it’s to bad this window’s between us or I’d kick your ass!”.  He does it at our front window as well. Although who knows, maybe he’s declaring his love for Purrl, I don’t speak chipmunk so we’ll never know.

What I Did On My Birthday August 18, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — frombeantosprout @ 7:52 pm

So I mentioned in my posts on Tuesday that I woke up to a nice surprise from Chris and Henry, the Swarovski tennis bracelet. Well that was just the beginning.

Henry and I went to our fitmom class (yep I worked up a sweat for my 30th). Susan went “easy” on us by not giving us burpees to do, however we did A LOT of ab work. I can’t count how long we did various forms of planks and had to hold them for a long time. I sure felt those the next day. If you want to slim your waistline, do regular planks and side planks to trim down.

I got home at 11:30 and my mom, stepdad, sister, brother in-law and nephews dropped by for lunch. My mom brought some Lebanese food from this great place in Hull (no idea what it’s called though). I didn’t have much time to socialize since the I had a pedicure booked for 1pm. My mom and stepdad were going to babysit Henry. Lucky for them, he slept from about 12:30 to 3:00 so it was more like they hung out with Steph and Martin while I was getting pampered at the spa. The pedicure was just divine. I’ve mentioned the Brookstreet hotel before. I just adore their spa. I could live there. I bought some trashy magazines, drank a diet pepsi and just let all the stress and tension of the past 6 months escape via foot massage and paraffin treatments. I got home and we had some cake. Great afternoon!

Triple chocolate...yum

Chris got home and we decided to go back to the Swan for a birthday dinner. I just love that place. It’s an old home turned pub with great food and great drinks. The atmosphere there is so neat. We were also celebrating our 9 year anniversary. Yep, Chris and I started dating on my 21st birthday.

The birthday girl (all cleaned up!)

Yep Henry was there (making a really weird face)

I love this pic. I look deranged

It was a great birthday day. Most of my presents were of the monetary kind. I’ve been scouring Kijiji looking for a round wood pedestal dining table and wood chairs for our kitchen. When I eventually find one that I like, I’ll put my birthday money towards it.

The Artist in Residence

Filed under: Uncategorized — frombeantosprout @ 1:56 pm

Henry’s been having trouble pooping so I decided to give him prunes today as a few people suggested. Well the effect was almost instantaneous. Henry loved the prunes as well, unfortunately, he liked them more as a medium for his art rather than actual food.

the artist's muse.. Ginger

I shall call it "instant bath"

After the art was put away...

About to get a good hosedown

It took three facecloths and a hot bath to get him clean. Once he was washed, dried and dressed, he then proceeded to throw up all over the both of us. I guess he’s trying to live up to the starving artist thing.

I plan to do a post about my birthday however I’ve had my hands a bit full these past two days (see pics above for example). Once I get my act together, I’ll do a proper one.

Thought I’d blog throughout the day today. Also thought I’d share some pics of yours truly when I was a baby. I can see some similarity with Henry, especially around the eyes.

This last one is where I see the most resemblance to Henry

30 feels good on me.  It helps that I got an awesome present this morning from Chris and Henry. I’ve been jokingly harassing Chris for this gift for years never thinking he’d get it for me. Well I got quite the surprise this morning! (sorry for the dark pics, it was 5:30 in the morning)

The shape of the box caught my attention right away

OMG!!! A Tennis Bracelet!!!

Henry approves!

Great start to turning 30.

ps: I also forgot to give a shout out to Alice who’s birthday it is today as well. Happy Birthday Alice!

Invasion of the Body Snatchers August 15, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — frombeantosprout @ 8:32 pm

Someone’s taken Henry and replaced him with a baby that sleeps well. It kind of happened overnight. On Friday morning I had a bit of a meltdown before Chris went to work. I was thisclose to say “that’s it, I’m going back to work, you take care of him!” so all day on Friday, Chris and I called each other back and forth all day Friday devising a tough love action plan for the night. Well Friday night rolls around and the little bugger sleeps from 8:30 to 1:30 eats a little then goes back to sleep until 6am. We were happy but cautious agreeing to postpone our action plan to Saturday night. Well Saturday night he slept for 9 straight hours! Chris and I both slept horribly that night in anticipation of crying and screaming and towards 5:00 am I was in actual physical pain at not having breastfed in so long. I turned around at one point and thought my boob was going to rip right off it was so heavy and full! Last night he slept until 2:30 woke up for some food then slept until 8:15. I honestly don’t recognize this kid anymore.

Some things that we have changed a bit is that we’ve instated regular nap times. Between 1 and 2 pm he goes down whether or not he’s sleepy. He’ll fuss a bit but eventually pass out for a few hours. I’m trying to get him to nap in the morning as well but that’s usually only for about 30-45 minutes. We’ve also stopped swaddling him and have given up on the sleep sack as well. I kind of just lay a light blanket over him. He likes to wrap himself up in it, twist onto his stomach and sleep with the blanket a bit under his face. It freaked me out for the first few nights (and I still get up to check on him from time to time) but it’s like he wants his face covered. I’ve heard other babies like having their face covered as well. I wonder why.

We had a super packed weekend starting with a play date with two rambunctious twins on Friday morning. We went to visit my friend Courtenay and her twin boys Quinton and Samuel. Henry loved watching them crawl around. He also is a big fan of Courtenay’s ceiling fan. He had his head craned upwards for 80% of our visit. I had noticed that when the twins got up from their nap they were in diapers only so I thought I’d try that for Henry’s naps and he sleeps so much better in just his diaper. At night though he needs a onesie. It’s so funny these little things you figure out. We also got another box of spiffy outfits that the boys had outgrown. My favorite is a pair of checkered pants, although I’m partial to checkered pants (shoutout to my high school self!).

How hip am I?

Chris’ uncle Denis (lovingly referred to as Duncle) was in town for the weekend visiting from Toledo. We get to see him about twice a year so most of the weekend was packed with dinners and lunches visiting with him. As a bonus, Chris’ aunt Libby came down from Kingston to visit for the weekend as well. We went to the Cheshire Cat Pub on Friday night (I forgot my camera that night), the Swan pub on Saturday night and a great lunch at Chris’ aunt Dawn on Sunday. It was a bit of a whirlwind time but worth it.

Our drinks of choice for the evening at the Swan

Henry ordering like a big boy

Having a sip of Pops beer (no worries, it was empty before you give Children's Aid a ring)

On Sunday night we went to my dad’s place for an early birthday dinner for me! Henry had a great time. I’ve mentioned before that he seems to really like my dad’s beagles. I don’t think he quite understands what they are but he thinks their hilarious, especially Ruben. Well last night, every time Ruben came into the room, Henry would just lose it and laugh like it was the funniest thing in the world. It didn’t get old for him either. I feel bad for Ruben, he kind of stopped coming into the room at one point, I think his feelings were hurt.

To fill the rest of our weekend, we spent most of Saturday trying to find a bicycle for myself. I’m interested in a comfort bike. We shopped around at Cycle Salvation and the Bike Dump but I couldn’t find one that I liked enough. There was a vintage comfort bike at the bike dump that I really liked but everytime I tried to ride it, the chain would pop off. The guy said “well if you buy it, I’ll have our mechanic  fix that.” I wasn’t really impressed with that response since I had no clue how it rode, I wasn’t going to pay almost $300 to find out I hated it.

I want something like this

There’s a model at Canadian tire that’s available so I might go take a look at that one. Chris just recently restored his bike so it would be great if we could both have bikes and drag Henry around in one of those little cart thingies.

Today I went to work to sign my letter of offer. I’m now officially a permanent FB-06, no more acting in that position. It’s a huge load off my mind to have that done with. It was also great  to see everyone from work. I miss the people there (the work, not so much). To top it off, I got a package from my friend Amy today for my birthday! Woot! Just in time. I love all the crafty awesomness it has in it, such as the subversive crosstitch

can't wait to make this! I love Parks and Recreation and Andy is my favourite character so this quote really hits home!

I also got some cool robot fabric, a Huck Fin Cap sewing pattern, some milk chocolate from Trader  Joe’s and a cool craft magazine that comes with a felting kit. I also got a meowing birthday card that has put my own cats on defcom 5. Thanks Amy, you spoil me too much!!

So in case I haven’t hinted enough, tomorrow’s my birthday. I’ll be turning 30. I honestly thought I’d be more upset that I am. I’m actually pretty ok with turning 30. It’s just one day more than today.

My family, the best gift a 30 year old could ask for!

Ps: I want to give a shout out to my friend Martine who’s birthday it is tomorrow as well! Yeah August 16th Leos!
